2015 CELEBRATION OF IRISH WRITER W.B. YEATS BIRTH 150 YEARS AGO

Yeats 2015

W.B. Yeats has long been recognised as one of the greatest writers from Ireland.
He is best known as a poet in Ireland and Internationally. What has been less recognised, however is his contribution to Irish Culture as a playwright.
We will celebrate the 150th year since Yeat’s birth by  having a production of ‘Cathleen Ní Houlihan’ by W.B.Yeats and Lady Augusta Gregory and ‘On Baile Strand’ by W. B.Yeats staged during this year’s Galway Fringe Festival and as part of the Worldwide celebrations Yeats 2015.These plays are a rare treat to see and will offer a unique way to ensure that the most vibrant, creative ,City of Culture in The West of Ireland-Galway,which Yeats loved and was inspired by,will pay fitting tribute to his literary genius.

AUGUST 25TH 2013 MONIVEA FAIR ON THE GREEN

AUGUST 25TH 2013   MONIVEA FAIR ON THE GREEN

This is a free event held every year on the last Sunday of August, from 10am in the scenic, unspoiled, small County Galway village of Monivea. It is a previous winner of the small town award for the Irish Tidy-Town Competition. The main and only street is one of the widest in Ireland as it was designed with a large central green. The green was used to put textiles out to be bleached and dried by the sun.

The day features a number of events that celebrate the culture, heritage, arts and crafts and traditions that the friendly locals are justly proud of.A family-friendly day out gives a real flavour of the best that rural West of Ireland life has to offer.Last year was memorable for a very impressive display of local animals that included everything from prize-winning rare breeds of ducks and hens to sheep, calf, pigs and show-jumping style demonstrations by young teenagers on  well-groomed ponies. There are plenty of other examples of local produce displayed on stalls, that are a joy to browse through and you can always find something to take home with you.

Fans of Classic machinery come from miles around ,to enjoy the diplays of Tractors and Cars, along with a few Vintage Motorbikes. It is well worth spending an hour  to see the display, that brings back the memories of the kind of machines that were seen in operation in the past. The young generation enjoy getting up close and personal with some of the machinery, while the older generations share their memories of how work was carried out in the past. All this and more can be found by taking a 20 minute drive from either Galway City or Gort Town. The town is only 5 minutes away from Athenry. The day is always enjoyable,I will be taking my 1972 Blue VW Beetle along around midday, see you there!
